About Us

The International Vocal Arts Workshop is an interdisciplinary arts program that takes place in and draws upon the rich culture of Grožnjan, Croatia. Founded in 2005 by Jane McMahan, professor of voice at Barnard College, Columbia University, the program brings together singers, actors, dancers and instrumentalists from across the United States and Europe. Half an hour from the Adriatic coast and two hours from Venice, Grožnjan has been a gathering place for artists and home to the Jeunesses Musicales International Culture Centre for over 30 years.

Call for Projects

For the 6th season of the International Vocal Arts Workshop we are widening the scope and loosening the structure of the program to open it up to a range of developing artists and students seeking a supportive and collaborative environment to work on their solo or ensemble works. We welcome projects in such diverse disciplines as vocal performance, theater, sound installation, puppetry and more, and encourage instrumentalists as both soloists and ensemble members. The program will be held June 6-21, 2011.

While providing participants with the freedom to structure their workday as they wish, we create community through shared meals, collaborative performances, the guidance, if requested, of our faculty, and opportunities to workshop works-in-progress. Faculty members will be exploring their own work during the summer's session but will make time available for individual lessons and coaching. They are particularly interested in reacting to, facilitating, and helping participants formulate and develop their own projects. In the process, they will support and encourage any group projects that emerge.

There will be many opportunities to hold concerts or performances for local and tourist audiences in a range of venues, including a concert hall, art galleries, and outside spaces. Participants may collaborate with our pianist, Yulia Potulova. We also encourage participants to become involved in optional skill-shares - past participants have led classes on yoga, mask-making and capoeira. About once a week, we arrange social outings to nearby seaside towns. Lastly, we also hold a day-long symposium around a chosen theme; past presenters have come from as far as the United Kingdom and Turkey.

Participants must cover their own travel and living expenses. The cost of three meals a day, room and board, the use of rehearsal and performance spaces, and program materials comes to about $1000 a week. We encourage participants to apply for grants from such funding sources as US Embassy Zagreb Cultural Grants, CEC Artslink, FaceCroatia, and others.
