Travel

Jeunesses Musicales staff picks up all participants from Buje for the 10-minute drive to Grožnjan. So, your destination is the town Buje.

Getting to Buje

There is one bus line that serves Buje from the Trieste central station (Centrale) (in Italy), and from Pula (in Croatia). We recommend traveling from Trieste, Italy. The Trieste bus station is the next building from the train station. The bus schedule is in the table below.

Autumn and Janelle

After flying into Trieste - take public transit (€ 4.05) or a taxi (~€ 60) to the central station (Centrale). Be aware that some flights to Trieste are too late in the afternoon for catching the last bus to Buje.

Detailed public transit directions from Trieste airport to Trieste Centrale:

You will be taking Bus No. 51 operated by APT Gorizia, which runs along the seaside (very pretty!) into Trieste. It comes every 30 minutes Mon-Sat (:05 and :35), and every hour on Sunday (:05 or :15) and generally takes 50 to 55 minutes. Buses going in both directions stop at the same bus stop at the airport. So make sure the bus you get on is going in the direction of Trieste.

Also, you will need to purchase a ticket before getting on the bus. The bus fare is € 4.05. You can puchase the bus ticket at the tourist booth (Infopoint Turismo). But if the booth is closed, such as on the weekend, you can use the blue ticket machine (fare code E06 for Trieste Centrale, exact change, coins only). The is a coin changer there that takes small bills. *You cannot pay on the bus.*

http://www.italyheaven.co.uk/friuliveneziagiulia/trieste-airport.html <-- description of the airport and a picture of the blue bus ticket machine

Another note: from the Trieste airport, if you don't get on the 16:05 bus (16:35 on Saturday and 16:15 on Sunday), you should take a taxi. Otherwise you might not make it. One time I got on the 17:05 at the airport and literally had to run to the 18:00 Buje bus as it was just pulling out of the station. Not recommended!

Anne Monique

If you fly into Milan from the US, you'll probably arrive in MXP Terminal 1. Malpensa Aeroporto is an actual train station, so you can purchase one single ticket through to Trieste Centrale. According to the rail schedule, you don't exactly have a lot of wiggle room -- 10:43am Malpensa Express to Milano Centrale, then the 12:05pm Eurocity #37 to Venezia Mestre, and then the 2:53pm Regionale Veloce arriving Trieste Centrale at 16:46pm. (There's one other option that leaves Malpensa at 11:56am and arrives Trieste Centrale at 17:46 -- that's cutting REALLY close and let's not attempt it.)

Be sure to ***validate the train ticket*** (stick the ticket into a machine on the platform that puts a time stamp on it) right before you get on the train. (Useful Italian phrases for train travel.)

Amy and Jessica

If you fly into Venice, take a bus to the train station (Venezia-Santa Lucia or Mestre), then take a train to Trieste Centrale. (The bus to Buje also stops at Venice once a day, but none of us has ever taken it in this direction.) Budget at least 3.5 hours between landing in Venice and arriving in Trieste.

I recommend taking FlyBus (€ 8 single/€ 15 return ) - schedules: VCE-Mestre (May) Mestre-VCE (June) VCE-Venezia (all times) At the train station (stazione ferroviaria), go up to the ticket window and ask for a ticket to Trieste Centrale -- 2nd class should be around € 15 (American credit cards are generally accepted). Trains leave Mestre every hour on :53 (take it no later than 14:53) and Venezia Santa Lucia every hour on :41 (take it no later than 14:41). The trip is around 2 hours +/- 10 minutes. There are other trains but they run on much slower routes.

Be sure to ***validate the train ticket*** (stick the ticket into a machine on the platform that puts a time stamp on it) right before you get on the train. (Useful Italian phrases for train travel.)

The Bus from Trieste

At the Trieste Centrale bus station, purchase a bus ticket to Buje from the ticket window. The fare is € 12 to € 15 cash. (The ticket staff may not speak English, but showing him the word "Buje" will do.) If you have luggage that needs to go to the belly of the bus (any rollerboard suitcase or large duffel bag), you will also need to pay the driver € 1 for each item while boarding.

Note: Buje is your last opportunity to stock up on dry groceries and fresh fruit/produce (we don't have refridgerators in Groznjan). There is a grocery store where the bus stops. There is a bank/ATM up the hill and past the large intersection...but there's also an ATM in Groznjan.
